The 231 is a transfer case that goes by many names. In 1986 the NP231 was originally manufactured by New Process Gear. In 1990 New Process changed its name to New Venture Gear which replaced the (NP) with (NV), now it is also commonly referred to as the NV231. Specific versions of the NP231 are followed by first letter of the corresponding vehicle manufacturer that the transfer case is compatible with (NP231C-Chevy, NP231D-Dodge, NP231J-Jeep).
The NP231 was extremely popular and used in a large variety of vehicles and became very popular until the New Venture ceased production in 2013.
